We at Blue Planet Divers cherish the waters around Koh Lanta and we, like many divers, want to do what we can to protect the aquatic life in the Andaman Sea. This year will see Blue Planet Divers increasing that commitment by working with Project Aware, www.projectaware.org (the environmental charitable organisation created by PADI) to:
- help clean up the beaches and reefs around Koh Lanta with the local community,
- educate our guests about maintaining and improving our beaches & reefs,
- recycle as much as we can and act as a recycling point for particular waste (i.e. batteries),
- reduce our carbon footprint as much as possible.
We know that many divers are frustrated by thoughtless individuals who damage the coral reefs and litter the sea and beaches with potentially harmful waste and many divers are annoyed by dive centres who do nothing to stop this, Mellisa and Laurent told us “Blue Planet Divers wants to work with the local community, divers and environmental organisations to protect and preserve the delicate aquatic ecosystems around Koh Lanta.”
See our website or our joint press release with Project Aware for more information.
Blue Planet Divers took part in the recent Koh Lanta beach clean up on the 13th September 2008. Working alongside Greenfins (the Thai environmental organisation) and the local community, Blue Planet Divers helped pick up over 4.7 tonnes of rubbish from 4 beaches! Over 700 people turned up to help with the clean-up, many from the local community and from Reuters and Make a Wish located in Bangkok. Blue Planet Divers organised the clean up of Klong Dao Beach where over tonne of waste was collected and sorted for recycling. Mellisa, responsible for collecting the data on the rubbish collected on Klong Dao Beach was amazed when she worked out that they had collected over 171kg of flip flops alone. Margot was trying to find a pair but to no avail! Laurent said “every year during low season, so much rubbish is washed up our beaches and when Greenfins asked us to help again this year, we were only too happy to support this event.” |
